As I was going around the supermarket I saw this corn and a whole section devoted to Halloween costumes (the most I've ever seen) all at rock bottom prices (like £3 to £6 ($6-$12) an absolute bargain!

I've just realised it's past midnight so it's already All hallows Eve.

London Bridges

Do you know how many bridges cross the Thames in London you might be surprised and can find the answer here.
When you drive along the Embankment which borders the Thames on your way into London you pass several bridges. I was trying to get photos of all of them but it proved more difficult than I anticipated. However I did get a couple of the Albert Bridge which looks particularly pretty when it's lit up at night. I think I only managed these because we had to stop at traffic lights! Also it was raining and a very dull day.

This is the Chelsea Bridge and you can see some of the Battersea Power Station in the background.

These were taken driving across the Vaxhall Bridge looking down towards the London Eye (which you can just see in the distance) This one looking towards the MI6 building.

Fun Monday # 39 I don't leave home without...

The very candid Karina is hosting this week. She wants to see our 'security blankets' as in 'what we wouldn't leave home without'!
There are a few things I never leave home without, and it depends whether I'm walking or driving. But top of my list has to be my specs as I'm short-sighted, this is just one pair but I do have a photochromic pair and sunglasses.

If I'm walking its these keys but if I'm driving it's the set below. I have to have them around my neck as I tend to loose them in my handbag~it's sad when you get old!!

Most times my handbag is with me and contains a lot of useful item, see what you recognise, beside the purse, cheque book wallet, address book, plasters are a must, so are wet wipes. I'll leave you to look a little closer if you are interested!
This is not a good photo as I had to take it through a mirror and crop. I am getting used to taking my camera with me everywhere I go as I would hate to miss the perfect blog shot!!
Lastly my cell phone. Before you say anything I know it's out of the arc and jolly heavy but it's the only one I've ever had and it works, so as I rarely use it it has to do.
So that's me done I'll see you all later........ now where did I put my car keys I need to do some grocery shopping!

Summertime Ends.

British Summer Time ended yesterday (well 2am today) so we had to put the clocks back an hour and I for one am not looking forward to living in semi-gloom for the next few months. Last night you technically got an extra hour of sleep, however my body clock doesn't realise that and I was up very early today (well before 6am). It's a good job really because we have to go to London again and hopefully this will be our last trip for a while. I will leave you with a photo I took last time I went to London. What you can't really see from this photo is the windmill going around. Now what puzzled me was there was no wind that day the arms were still rotating quite fast which suggests it was being powered. Excuse me I thought the whole idea was to create electricity not use it up!!

Childhood Book

I was at a bit of a loss as to what to write about today and decided to share one of my early childhood books with you. I can't remember exactly how old I was when I had this book but my guess is we are talking some 57 years ago. I just loved this book and would spend hours looking at the pretty dresses, reading and dreaming. Doesn't every little girl want to be a fairy princess, I know I did.
I wanted to do a bit of experimenting so I am presenting this as a slide show, sorry if you find it a bit long and tedious. (4 mins approx)

PS If anyone does watch this slide show please will you tell me if jumps or runs smoothly thanks.

I-SPY !

I don't think this guy would appreciate me spying on him. Just after these were taken he was falling about on the floor. I thought it might be drink or drugs but then he might just have been ill. He could have been a diabetic! Should I feel guilty for not finding out but to tell the truth I was a bit scared. What would you have done?

Open letter to guest next door

Dear Smoker

I personally have no objection to you smoking which may or may not contribute to your early demise. The fact that you will very likely need treatment for smoking related illnesses in the future only rankles a little bit as my taxes contribute to the NHS (National Health Service) that will be forced to treat you.

What I do very strongly object to is the fact that you throw your cigarette butt out of the bedroom window and into my garden or onto my kitchen roof. Why do you do this when smoking is not permitted in the guest house? I understand notices are in the bedrooms to advise guests of this! Maybe it is ignorance and you can't read but that is easily remedied as the local college does offer adult reading classes. I noticed that the bedroom window was wide open so I see you like fresh air even on a chilly morning~ silly me you weren't just hoping to get rid of the smell were you!!

You must have seen that there is a seating area outside the guest house. That is not to admire the view but to facilitate (that means make it easier in case you don't know) smokers. In future please do me the courtesy of using it.

Sadly you are not the first guest who has behaved in this manner, however I would like think you might be the last to cause me the inconvenience of clearing up behind you.

thank you

PS yes just in case you are wondering I do have evidence and I will be telling the proprietor.

Witty Wednesday # 24

I can't remember who sent me this but I think there is some truth in it, don't know what you think!

1. There are at least two people in this world that you would die for.
2. At least 15 people in this world love you in some way.
3. The only reason anyone would ever hate you is because they want to be just like you.
4. A smile from you can bring happiness to anyone, even if they don't like you.
5. Every night, SOMEONE thinks about you before they go to sleep.
6. You mean the world to someone.
7. You are special and unique.
8. Someone that you don't even know exists loves you.
9. When you make the biggest mistake ever, something good comes from it.
10. When you think the world has turned its back on you take another look.
11. Always remember the compliments you received. Forget about the rude remarks.

And always remember....when life hands you Lemons, ask for tequila
and salt and call me over!

Good friends are like stars........
You don't always see them,
But you know they are always there.

*****************************************
I AM THANKFUL: FOR THE WIFE WHO SAYS IT'S HOT DOGS TONIGHT, BECAUSE
SHE IS HOME WITH ME, AND NOT OUT WITH SOMEONE ELSE.

FOR THE HUSBAND WHO IS ON THE SOFA BEING A COUCH POTATO, BECAUSE
HE IS HOME WITH ME AND NOT OUT AT THE BARS.

FOR THE TEENAGER WHO IS COMPLAINING ABOUT DOING DISHES BECAUSE
IT MEANS S/HE IS AT HOME, NOT ON THE STREETS.

FOR THE TAXES I PAY BECAUSE
IT MEANS I AM EMPLOYED

FOR THE MESS TO CLEAN AFTER A PARTY BECAUSE
IT MEANS I HAVE BEEN SURROUNDED BY FRIENDS.

FOR THE CLOTHES THAT FIT A LITTLE TOO SNUG BECAUSE
IT MEANS I HAVE ENOUGH TO EAT.

FOR MY SHADOW THAT WATCHES ME WORK BECAUSE
IT MEANS I AM OUT IN THE SUNSHINE

FOR A LAWN THAT NEEDS MOWING, WINDOWS THAT NEED CLEANING, AND GUTTERS THAT NEED FIXING BECAUSE
IT MEANS I HAVE A HOME

FOR ALL THE COMPLAINING I HEAR ABOUT THE GOVERNMENT BECAUSE
IT MEANS WE HAVE FREEDOM OF SPEECH.

FOR THE PARKING SPOT I FIND AT THE FAR END OF THE PARKING LOT BECAUSE
IT MEANS I AM CAPABLE OF WALKING AND I HAVE BEEN BLESSED WITH TRANSPORTATION .

FOR MY HUGE HEATING BILL BECAUSE
IT MEANS I AM WARM.

FOR THE LADY BEHIND ME IN CHURCH WHO SINGS OFF KEY BECAUSE
IT MEANS I CAN HEAR.

FOR THE PILE OF LAUNDRY AND IRONING BECAUSE
IT MEANS I HAVE CLOTHES TO WEAR.

FOR WEARINESS AND ACHING MUSCLES AT THE END OF THE DAY BECAUSE
IT MEANS I HAVE BEEN CAPABLE OF WORKING HARD.

FOR THE ALARM THAT GOES OFF IN THE EARLY MORNING HOURS BECAUSE
IT MEANS I AM ALIVE.

AND FINALLY, FOR TOO MUCH E-MAIL BECAUSE
IT MEANS I HAVE FRIENDS WHO ARE THINKING OF ME.

Live well, Laugh often, & Love with all of your heart!

Happiness is....

having a new handbag (purse). My mother has been pestering lamenting
for several weeks that she needs a new handbag. She managed to get the lining caught in the zip of her winter bag and she cut it open (I didn't know anything about it until the deed was done as I might have been able to fix it). Naturally it was damaged goods and so it had to be thrown away. Originally the bag came from a charity shop so it didn't cost a lot and my mother was convinced that she would get another in the same way, but having scoured all the local charity shops we had no luck.
So today I had to go and sort out some carpeting at our local Mall and decided I would take a look at some of the stores to see if I could find a suitable bag. Eventually I came up with this one, which meets all her criteria...easy zip, not many compartments so easy to find things, big enough to carry a snack (she often likes to take a biscuit or dried fruit out with her, it saves buying a pudding when she has her lunch out on a Wednesday!). (The colours are not really showing that well, it's basically brown with some bronze)
When I got it home I could see by her initial reaction that she wasn't sure, but within half an hour, with a little subtle persuasion (I told her I would like it for me, and I shortened the handle by one notch) she now thinks it is just right, and that I know exactly what she likes! Phew thank goodness for that.... I even told her she could have it for an early birthday present but she had to realize she wouldn't be getting anything else come the day (her birthday isn't until December), her response was "that's a pity". In the past she has often wanted early presents and then I managed to find something else on the day. However I'm retired now so I have to budget a lot more carefully but you never know I might just find a little surprise as I expect she will have forgotten the bag was her present by then!!

Fun Monday # 38~ Clothing Art.

This week's Fun Monday is being hosted by that very popular animal lover, Willowtree, he wants to see some clothing art. That's tee shirts, baseball caps, hoodies, sports uniforms or any bit of clothing that you or your kids own that has interesting, funny or artistic graphics.

I wanted to keep it simple so not a lot of explanation. Until about a year ago Sam worked at ILM and after the films were completed they had the opportunity to buy momentos made for the crews. So naturally we all got the benefit as Sam used to send us T-shirts amongst other things. Some I have still kept in the original packaging as I think they will become collectors items and I wasn't able to photograph those properly!!

I will also just mention the second t-shirt top line which is very old and well worn it was given to me by Ian Bird who produced the original music video, for the Pet Shop Boys 'Liberation' Album. (not sure if it will play that well it was a bit jumpy on UTube).

Now head over to Willowtree he has a nice collection and you can see everyone else who is playing today.

Sunday Sunshine

I don't know what the temperature is today but it is very hot for the time of the year and we are trying to make the most of it. I have spent the morning chasing up more forms (see yesterday's post) and when I came home for lunch, my mother whom I haven't mention lately decided she would sit in the sun for half an hour. Always looking for a photo opportunity I naturally got the camera. You will see the tortoises are also making the most of the late sunshine. I wish I could join them but as soon as I've posted this I'm back out to knock on doors for another couple of hours.

I hope it's sunny where you are and that you are enjoying your 'Sun'day.

Up up and away~ not today!

In the UK it is compulsory to place your name on the Electoral Register to vote in elections and referendums. However, not every household returns their forms and these have to be followed up through personal visits. Today Embee and I have been out all day chasing up some of these forms. We do get paid for this, albeit not very much for the amount of effort it takes. When the weather is warm and reasonably sunny like today I quite enjoy it. Over the years you get used to visiting the same households, I'm always amused by the reasons excuses people have for not having returned their forms. It was rather funny to find a couple of houses where the wife confidently said "my husband posted it" for them to then admit the forms were still in the car. Someone else said we've been talking about that~ excuse me forget talking about it just fill the form and post it. I felt so sad for one elderly lady whose husband had died four days ago and today would have been their wedding anniversary, I think she said it would have been 43 years. I was pleased that she had all her family with her today.
An added bonus is that Embee meets me for lunch at one of the pubs in the area and this helps the day along. Towards the end of the day, with only five more houses to visit before I headed home, I saw a hot air balloon gradually loosing height and eventually landing in one of the fields. That's when I wished I had my camera, I nearly put it in the car but decided I wouldn't need it~ wrong again! As I was writing this I remembered that back in August I took a photo of a very similar balloon that floated over the gardens one evening so that's what I'm posting.
I'm sure everyone else will be watching the rugby rather than blogging. Embee did tell me the score so far and England are currently trailing which is not good news. However there's still time for them to reverse this~ I must send positive vibes!!

An Autumn Walk

I have been trying on and off all day to upload these photos that I took when I went on my Fungi Forage earlier in the week. These are general views of the area rather than of the actual fungi that we managed to find. I am going on another walk in a couple of weeks and I am hoping for some better photos.
It is quite encouraging to know that they have manged to retain some of the natural beauty of the area alongside the vast sprawl of houses that have been built on much of the land over the past 25 years. Although you can hear the traffic from the motorway and the hustle and bustle from the schools and houses it still feels like another world once you are in the woods. There was a quiet peacefulness that reminded me of my childhood growing up in the country as we walked along an area known as Three Brooks after cutting through Webbs Wood. There were a few people about walking dogs and mothers with toddlers out for a stroll in the afternoon sunshine. We actually didn't walk that far in the two hours we were out as we stopped to look at trees and learn about the different fungi we found. We returned along the edge of Savages Wood.

Webbs Wood is ancient woodland and Savages Wood was originally the boundary between two local parishes. There are several brooks and small lakes where you can see a lot of birds. It is still quite green but some of the bushes have lovely red berries. There is even a relic from the days the land was farmed. I think it might be a plough but I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong!

I'm now looking forward to my next walk in Warmley Forest Park on October 31st, that is provided it's not raining. I'm a fine weather walker!!

Halloween Treats

Aren't I lucky Hootin'Annie has given me this Halloween treat, definitely better than a trick and who doesn't just love a treat!

Each day up until Halloween [October 31st] Hootin'Annie will be handing out a treat for up to five bloggers who drop by her blog during the week for visiting. She has been giving a different treat each week. She says I'm more than welcomed to pass it along to blogs I think are deserving of a special treat for the season. She says "Kinda like 'Pay it Forward' But DON'T just choose your friends making this cliquish and 'just groupies'". That's quite difficult because I want to treat all my friends, for being loyal and reading all the witty, clever rubbish I write but I know what she means when she says....

"Make NEW friends by choosing random visitors!!! Make it RANDOM"!!

I have been very lucky to have had a lot of people feed my addiction visit me this week so I decided to pass on my treat to some of my Witty Wednesday visitors. I would love to pass this on to everyone but these are the people I am treating today:

Grannymar who is starting a Thursday Special and today's little story is amusing.
Katy who is Her Indoors will know why I think she needs a treat.
Sandy at Myanderings because anyone who loves dogs and is so kind deserves a lot of treats.
Misslionheart at A Place For Everything just joined in my Witty Wednesday for the first time and that deserves a treat.

If you do decide to share it with others
then, use the IMAGE and link it back to my blog and to Hootin'Annie to
explain where the idea originated.

Witty Wednesday # 23

This was sent to me by Amy w over at A Family Story and it made me laugh.....

Two Women Talking In Heaven:

1st woman: Hi! My name is Wanda.

2nd woman: Hi! I 'm Sylvia. How'd you die?

1st woman: I froze to death.

2nd woman: How horrible!

1st woman: It wasn't so bad. After I quit shaking from the cold, I began to get warm & sleepy, and finally died a peaceful death. What about you?

2nd woman: I died of a massive heart attack. I suspected that my husband was cheating, so I came home early to catch him in the act. But instead, I found him all by himself in the den watching TV.

1st woman: So, what happened?

2nd woman: I was so sure there was another woman there somewhere that I
started running all over the house looking. I ran up into the attic and searched, and down into the basement. Then I went through every closet and checked under all the beds . I kept this up until I had looked everywhere, and finally I became so exhausted that I just keeled over with a heart attack and died.

1st woman: Too bad you didn't look in the freezer........ we'd both still be alive

15 PIECES OF ADVICE TO BE PASSED ON TO YOUR MUM, YOUR DAUGHTERS OR GRANDDAUGHTERS, NIECES, AUNTS, GIRLFRIENDS, ETC. sent by a non blogging friend:

1. Don't imagine you can change a man - unless he's in nappies.

2. What do you do if your boyfriend walks out? You shut the door.

3. If they put a man on the moon - they should be able to put them all up there.

4. Never let your man's mind wander - it's too little to be out alone.

5. Go for the younger man. You might as well, they never mature anyway.

6. Men are all the same - they just have different faces, so that you can tell them apart.

7. Definition of a bachelor: a man who has missed the opportunity to make some woman miserable.

8. Women don't make fools of men - most of them are the do-it-yourself types.

9. Best way to get a man to do something is to suggest he is too old for it.

10. Love is blind, but marriage is a real eye-opener.

11. If you want a committed man, look in a mental hospital.

12. The children of Israel wandered around the desert for 40 years. Even in Biblical times, men wouldn't ask for directions.

13. If he asks what sort of books you're interested in, tell him cheque books.

14. Remember a sense of humor does not mean that you tell him jokes, it means that you laugh at his.

15. Sadly, all men are created equal.
*****************************************************
Now who's trying to tell me something!!!!

Exercise Routine
(If you're over 40, you might want to take it easy at first, then do it faster as you become more proficient. It may be too strenuous for some.)

Always consult your doctor before starting any exercise program!

SCROLL DOWN............

NOW SCROLL UP.

That's enough for the first day.

Great job.

Have a glass of wine.

Enjoy your day I'm hoping to go 'Fungi Foraging'

Men at work!!!

I thought that I would just share this with you. After all the hard work I put into clearing the moss during the summer we are now having the back yard cleaned. What you can't see is another guy standing watching just out of sight. What came to mind was how many men does it take to.........but I'm sure someone out there can come up with a much better caption than that!!!!!

Fun Monday # 37

Janet is our gracious host this week. She took a vote and this is is the assignement:

Describe your meeting with your spouse/significant other. I especially want to hear "meet cute" stories. And it doesn't have to be your actual current sig/other. Perhaps the "meet cute" story is a former boy/girlfriend... or even a best friend. Illustrate with photos, of course.

I'm very decisive so After much umming and ahhing you are going to learn how I met EmBee and it's not at all 'cute' but it's what you are going to get. If you want cute you can pass on this and move to the next story!!

Why am I posting a picture of tennis players. There's no romance in that I hear you say~ well let me tell you I have seen a lot of hanky-panky at tennis clubs!!! Well it's really a clue to where we first met. Not actually at the tennis club where this picture was taken. This was taken a few years later at an annual August tournament that we entered. See if you can find the whole family. By the way for those who may not have seen any pictures of my dog. That is Tamsie in the front (much loved and long gone to doggie heaven). As usual I digress so back to the story.

Back in 1973 a friend of mine persuaded me to join a local tennis club. Little did I know that tennis would soon become my saviour when a few months later my husband left me for a trollop someone else. Over that summer very sadly there were three other people (2 male and 1 female) at the tennis club who were also left high and dry by their respective partners (oddly all our surnames began with 'B').
I became quite friendly with Margaret and she even came and worked with me in my playgroup. I can see you thinking nice and convenient, I did actually partner and win the club mixed doubles with Norman (absolutely no romance), he was a good tennis player so I was able to stand on court, hitting the odd ball, while he did all the work. Margaret actually quite fancied Embee and she used to try and get into sets with him and we did try and set them up.

However, he didn't seem to take the bait and one Sunday he arrived on my doorstep, clutching a bunch of .......no not flowers.........rhubarb !!! I though very kind and invited him in for a cup of coffee. My two little darlings were very friendly towards him and I think they drew him pictures. They really did enjoy having some male company. After this it became a bit of a joke with my step- father, who used to call him 'the rhubarb man'.

To cut a long story short Embee wanted somewhere to take his daughter and my girls enjoyed trips out so he used to take them out while I was working as a private nurse. He was quite persistent and I did go out on dates and he gradually wheedled his way in became a part of our lives. So no great romance but a friendship that blossomed and when Embee sold his house he moved in with us. We finally got married in 1978. So next year will be our Pearl Anniversary~ just an early reminder Embee as I know you will be reading this!!
Sam was already practising early photographic skills as she took this picture on one of our early holidays.
Same holiday Embee's a big kid and gets in on the fun.
Wait is that Daniel Craig emerging from the sea and talking to Sam!!! Lets take a closer look... sorry to disappoint you........ swimming trunks were all like that back in the 70's!!

Still looking for Inspiration

When I looked in my archives for this time last year I could not believe that I had titled the post 'Inspiration' as this was exactly what I had called today's post. However last year I was preparing for a visit to New England and wondered what clothes to wear this year I'm feeling rather flat and looking for inspiration about what to write!!
For those who read my post yesterday and offered words of comfort and support I would like to say a big thank you. When I used the Second Severn Crossing Bridge in my post on Monday, it didn't really occur to me at the time that I would actually be crossing it so soon. This view is returning from Wales.
As my brain doesn't seem to want to function (OK I know that's nothing new-thought I'd get in before John makes a wisecrack) I'm going to leave it there, and I am still intending to visit all the FM posts even if the party's over.

A Special Friendship

Sheena was a wife, a mother of two boys, a daughter, a sister, a daughter-in-law and a special friend to my daughter Sam.

Back in May on Livestrong day I asked you to say a prayer for Sam's friend Sheena.
Last Friday I got the call I was dreading to tell me that Sheena had passed away peacefully in her sleep during the night. It was not unexpected, we knew she had slipped into a coma, but it was still very upsetting to hear the words. I am pleased that Sam was able to see her friend one last time on her recent trip to England.

This little group of five have shared a friendship that had lasted since they were in Junior School together and became stronger when they went on to attend the same secondary school. They all lived within half a mile of each other so shared many leisure activities as they were growing up. As parents we shared transport to various guiding events and over the years there were a host of birthday parties. There was the time after their exams when they spent a week in a caravan, I worried myself sick but they had a great time and probably had no idea how worried we were back home. Beccy was always on the fringes of the group because she was younger and you might like to read what she has to say about the friendship. This was taken in 1984.

Sam and Sheena were particularly close, they went through a hippy phase together, long skirts, different hair styles, large hoop earrings, all part of developing independence and their own style. I remember the time they drove to Devon in Sam's first car a Morris Minor to go camping (1984). I don't think I slept a wink thinking of all the dangers that could befall two young girls alone and camping. Luckily we all survived and as far as I know nothing too disastrous happened. I'm sure they wouldn't have told us if it had. Although I like to think my children would confide in me, I'm sure I didn't know every thing that went on!! (and there were some things I knew but chose to ignore!)
After they left school they all went their separate ways to college and university but still managed to meet up occasionally. Back in 1992 Sheena stayed the night with us when Vicky got married.
A few years later they all brought their children to my house one time which was great fun.I think the last time all five were together was that Christmas when they all came here to see Sam on one of her visits home. I believe this is one of the last photos taken of these five friends together.
Sheena cared for the environment, she loved nature and she was devoted to her family. Today I go to help celebrate her life and say farewell but it will be tinged with sadness that she will not around to see her sons grow into the fine young men I know they will become due to her influences. She was a very special person to so many people and she will be greatly missed. Please think of Sheena's family today.
