Open letter to guest next door

Dear Smoker

I personally have no objection to you smoking which may or may not contribute to your early demise. The fact that you will very likely need treatment for smoking related illnesses in the future only rankles a little bit as my taxes contribute to the NHS (National Health Service) that will be forced to treat you.

What I do very strongly object to is the fact that you throw your cigarette butt out of the bedroom window and into my garden or onto my kitchen roof. Why do you do this when smoking is not permitted in the guest house? I understand notices are in the bedrooms to advise guests of this! Maybe it is ignorance and you can't read but that is easily remedied as the local college does offer adult reading classes. I noticed that the bedroom window was wide open so I see you like fresh air even on a chilly morning~ silly me you weren't just hoping to get rid of the smell were you!!

You must have seen that there is a seating area outside the guest house. That is not to admire the view but to facilitate (that means make it easier in case you don't know) smokers. In future please do me the courtesy of using it.

Sadly you are not the first guest who has behaved in this manner, however I would like think you might be the last to cause me the inconvenience of clearing up behind you.

thank you

PS yes just in case you are wondering I do have evidence and I will be telling the proprietor.

I'm an ex-hotel manager, I know how sneaky smokers can be!

Chef smokes, but always abides by the rules when we stay in a hotel/guest house...

misslionheart it must be a nightmare for anyone in the hotel business!

Dear chrisb. A friend I was travelling with recently just disregarded the rules in that sense, but she stopped when I said something. At least she stopped :)

LMM glad your friend listen to you. I think both smokers and non-smokers need to respect the other point of view and the RULES.

Good for you Chris! Hope he reads this too. I hate smokers who go on puffing standing right next to you. NC is still a Tobacco heaven. When we came her 8 yrs ago, smoking was permitted in the malls. I just hated going to the mall. But 2 yrs later, they banned smoking thankfully!
Hope your problem is taken care of. Don't they have ashtrays?:P

i hate that. i cant tell you how many times i've choked and gagged on smoke and people still insist on holding it IN YOUR FACE!!!!! in a bar, restaurant, etc. Here in the states its a BIG DEAL that some places are considering making it illegal to smoke in these places. They swear that people will not "drink" if they can't smoke. I have another thing to tell them. People will drink whether they can smoke or not. Duh. They go to the BAR to DRINK.. But I asked my mom (a smoker) if it would cause her any undue harm not to smoke in a restaurant - and she said no, she doesnt smoke when she eats anyway. Several years ago she quit smoking in her house except in the basement - and when we stay - she doesnt smoke in there since that's where we sleep. Considerate, if you ask me. And usually she does smoke outside, so that's nice. my hubby gets to the point where he can't breathe. And then there's his folks, who will sometimes just sit at the table where we are despite us gagging. sometimes they go to the window, but they still smoke in the house. we both smell awful after we leave there. like we need another shower. if i have something that i can't wash easily, i dont wear it there since i wouldnt be able to get it clean. if we're going there, we pack an EXTRA set of clothes cause we know we wouldnt be able to wear the same jacket or set of pants or something because they smell so bad after leaving there. ick!

i;m glad you're taking a stand!

As an ex-smoker I think it disgusts me more! What are these people thinking (besides nothing?!)

I am another anti-smoker. The smell lingers in my nostrils and on my clothes for days when I have had contact with smokers.

Any way you could block that window near you? ;)

Very nicely written. I just love a well-written scathing letter with no cuss words! Great job.

Disgusting habit!!

3 1/2 MONTHS CLEAR NOW!

Won't the person get a fine? I know we have stayed at motels that have signs stating that after you check out if the cleaning people smell the smoke in the room they can add $100 cleaning fee to your credit card.

Oh and in our area (town/city) the city has banned smoking in all restaurants and bars. :)

I'm refraining from ranting about smoking, so I will say "WELL DONE!!"
That was definetly very rude and ignorant behavior. God forbid he dispose of his own smoke.

Alix I believe in making my point when I know I'm in the right.

her indoors it got my dander up. I like the serve it up for dinner. It's actually only a B&B and the other thing some guests do is throw their take away rubbish and cans in my front garden so don't get me started on that!!

asha some people are pretty thoughtless.

deborah the owners actually live on the premises.

frannie extremely inconsiderate I'm waiting to see if he/she(usually males stay there)is back tonight.

jill my first hubby smoked and I hated it. Embee used to smoke when we first met but he soon gave it up! I too hate the smell that gets into your clothes. Had a little giggle at taking extra clothes to IL's.

lisa as you say empty headed!

grannymar the number of anti-smokers is growing but not amongst the youth I'm sad to say and girls in particular if you can believe the surveys.

sandy thanks for the compliment.

Ac I like the 'butt'comment.

john you are doing well you can visit me anytime!

lisa's chaos this is only a small B&B so I don't think any such rules are in place.

tara I will take a look.

sally I can't write them as well as you do but I did try!

christine it was funny because when I got up this morning I had no idea what I was going to write about today. That was until I went to put my recycling out and saw that 'butt'!

Have you ever noticed that some cigarette smokers hold their burning cigs closer to you than to themselves? My husband had a co-worker that he rode with in a pickup every day and he held that cig over by him all the time, finally he just snipped it off! I had a co-worker who chain smoked so badly that he often had two cigarettes going at once.

Good job! Go kick some butt (no pun intended.....okay, maybe a little intended.)

I think the majority of smokers are just rude rude rude with their butts.

My next door neighbor drove by my house the other day and flicked her butt out the window - so it landed on my driveway. I was so mad. I live on a nice street - I don't need her stinky trash there.

I feel your pain!

Oooh....go get him!!! And it's a good thing that your house didn't catch on fire!

junebug I know exactly what you mean about smoker not wanting to inhale their own smoke. Most of the workplaces in the UK have now banned smoking in the building.

nikki very good!

karmyn did you throw it back to her that's what I'm tempted to do.

tiggerlane he and I am pretty certain it's a he needs 'butt' kicking as Nikki suggests!

My hubby used to smoke and it annoyed me to the extreme. Now we try to avoid anywhere there is smoking, especially if our toddler is with us.

Kill yourself at home, but spare me when you are in public, please!
