Tortoises Feeding

Several of you have asked how Topsy is doing. She has been home from the vet for a week now and is doing well.
I have been giving her a nice warm bath everyday and hand feeding her (well it's more force feeding as I have to physically open her mouth and make sure the peas are pushed right to the back of her throat so that she swallows them). She is fairly cooperative and has not been retracting her head which has made it a lot easier for me.
My mother took these last two photos and they are not really in focus~ but I guess you get the idea!
They are really pleased to be getting the sun and they all gravitate to one place!
This video may be a little disjointed as I've not really got the hang of editing! You will see that Tom keeps muscling in when the ladies are eating. I don't know what was wrong with blogger as it uploaded the video but then didn't finish the process. I left it on overnight and I've even got up at the crack of dawn to check~ no luck damn it~ so I've done it through You tube instead lets hope this works! The angle might look odd on the last part as I was filming from above.

Tom is such a brute, I can still remember the pain and the blood when he bit my finger.

And where are his manners, sticking his butt into lunch!

Amazing ! Is it true that some species of turtles, when the bite you, won't let go until it thunders? Just wondering.

There must have been a time in your life when you could not have conceived that you'd ever hand-feed a tortoise.

LOVED the photos and the video!! I miss the 3 toed box turtle we had. Boo hoo. Previously I thought they were MUCH bigger than they really are.

AC most people probably think I'm mad devoting so much time to them but now I'm retired I have no excuses!

kaytabug they are really quite small when you compare them to the giant tortoises.

Very interesting. I never knew anyone who had a tortoise for a pet.

Thank you for visiting me recently and leaving a comment.

Chris, that's rip-roaring action! LOL.

Swampy, I think the turtles you refer to are called Snappers.

I have fallen in love with Topsy. :) I guess it could be hard to force feed a tortoise. I mean, really she could just clam up on you. Go Topsy GO! :)

Had to laugh at the photo of you feeding him the peas!

Ah, to lay in the sun all day, that's the life!

Glad Topsy is feeling better. Ella was here with me watching the video, she is fascinated and even remembered the egg laying video from last year! ;-) Now I'm off to google the difference between turtles and tortoises! Sigh! ;-)

Forcing a little mouth open. Peas. Doesn't that remind you of something else?

sam LOl it does now you've reminded me; although I don't think I ever physically forced you did I??

deborah, I'm glad Ella remembered the other video, I love it when the children enjoy them.

I think you are such a good Tortoise-Mama! These guys just fascinate me.

I thought the same as Kila... Oh to just lie in the sun, and let Chris B feed me peas. Giggle.

What a hoot, especially hearing the paper and wondering forever what that noise was. Finally Tom moves into the video.
