Corfu # 6 Vidos Island (part 1)

When I was in Corfu (it seems so long ago now) I visted Vidos Island, which is a short ferry ride from where we stayed. It is a beautiful little island that you can walk around quite easily if you have the energy. I took some lovely views but this is not what I want to share with you today. As we left the ferry, we stopped to have a drink at a small cafe and this was the floor show!
So what are these rabbits watching..........
....pheasants. It was so interesting to see that as the pheasants approached the rabbits closed in and positioned themselves in a way that looked threatening. The pheasants did not come any closer and pretended they didn't see.
Even the male decided to turn his back and walk away.
We came across this little area where a lady was feeding pheasants and turkeys, it was then that we decided maybe these and the rabbits were being bred for the table! Better not to dwell on this!

Marmite is spreading

Love it or hate it I noticed this on the back of my Marmite jar and as I was lost for words this is all I could manage today........

This day last year I was heading home from San Francisco. I am looking forward to going back again but, at the moment, not sure when that will be.

Nostalgia

Today I am feeling rather nostalgic. Last night I attended the final meeting of a tennis club that I was a member of for half my life. At school tennis was one of the sports we girls played in the summer. I loved it but as the *fat kid* I was not really taken seriously even though I was better than average but not good enough to make the teams.

At home I would spend hours hitting a ball against a wall, the local Youth Club were allowed to use the grass tennis court belonging to the vicarage but I could rarely get anyone to come and play with me!

Once I left school and went to train as a nurse I was excited to learn they had tennis courts. I persuaded one of the other girls to come with me to join the club. The trouble was this only served to make me realise I was not really up their standard. Instead of persevering, I lost all confidence and packed away my racquet.

Fast forward 10 years and two children and I was running a home-based pre-school. One day a lady came to enrol her daughter, who happened to be the same age as Beccy and they became best friends (that's another story). To cut a long story short I became very friendly with the mother.
One day tennis cropped up during a conversation and my friend mentioned that she wanted to join a small local tennis club. I had passed the courts many times as it was only a five min walk from both our homes. I clearly remember looking longingly at the people playing there as I passed by, but I would never have plucked up the courage to ask about joining.

We agreed to apply to join together and we had to having a playing in test and were accepted (flukily playing against the lady captain and winning the set might have had something to do with it). My friend was a much better player than me but somehow I got by and gradually with a lot of playing I improved. One thing I was never short on was determination!

It was around this time (Sept 1973) that I became a single parent and that tennis club was my saviour. I had very little money but thank goodness I somehow managed to pay my subs. It's surprising how good you feel when you hit a tennis ball really hard and when you beat your opponent (at the time it was like hitting my ex he never liked me playing tennis). The girls could come with me and everyone was very friendly and supportive. We took turns to make Saturday afternoon teas and I gradually got a new circle of friends.

I joined in all the club tournaments and in 1975 my friend and I were runners up in the ladies doubles. The following season (76) one of my biggest thrills was winning the mixed doubles trophy with one of the better male players. I really only had to defend my little area of the court and he did the rest..but it was still a win!
Then in 1977, my partner and I won the ladies doubles (my partner was an actress who, at the time, was in a long running radio programme called the Archers) and I was, also, a runner up in the mixed doubles and ladies singles. It was not until 1978 that I managed to win the Ladies single Championships. That was a very sweet victory.

By now I wanted to play all the year round (our courts were shale and there was no winter play) so I joined another club and this meant I could play even more competitively. The girls wanted to learn to play so I went on a coaching course and qualified as a Part 1 Elementary Teacher of Tennis, so that I could help them. This actually improved my own game and by now I was playing in the local league teams.

I think it's also important to give back to something that has given you a lot of pleasure and for many years I served on the committees of both tennis clubs. We hosted National tournaments and I did the catering which was a good fun raiser for the club. I was lucky to have the girls helping me by then. They became good players themselves and, although I know I have written about this before, but I have to say I was very proud to win the Bristol Parks Tournament with both my daughters back in 85 with Sam and 86 with Beccy).

If you have read this far I think you will have gathered that tennis has been a very important part of my life and it was a big disappointment to me when I began to get knee problems, the last club championship were played in 2000 and I won the ladies singles and the ladies doubles and it was around this time that the club numbers began to dwindle and by about 2003 we realised the club was no longer sustainable. The remaining few members joined other local clubs but I decided to call it a day.

I never once imagined that I would not be playing tennis once I retired from work. In fact this is what I was looking forward to most of all. I used to joke that I would have my ashes scattered on the tennis court. I think that if the club had not folded then I probably would have stayed playing, socially, despite the joint problems. Beccy still enjoys her tennis, and luckily both my two youngest grand children also enjoy playing and I get great pleasure from following their progress. Sam started playing again last year but I'm not sure if she had kept it up.

So to get back to the point, last night was the end of an era, and over 30 years of tennis memories for me.
I probably should add that I met Embee at this tennis club, he'll get upset if he doesn't get a mention!

The picture at the top is my collection of trophies, normally they live in a cardboard box in the cellar, but it was great fun giving them an airing and re-living a few memorable moments.

I would like to wish my daughter, Sam and her partner, Fred, together with all my friends in American a very happy and peaceful Thanksgiving.

Kitten gave a lot of her friends this lovely little button and I'm so delighted to be one of the lucky recipients and it's perfect for today.

Witty Wednesday # 74 Police, sex symbol, Harley Davidson

Thanks John I have been trawling back through my emails and I think you sent me this months ago!

HOW TO CALL THE POLICE WHEN YOU'RE OLD AND DON'T MOVE FAST ANYMORE.

George Phillips of Marsh Green, Wigan was going up to bed when his wife told him that he'd left the light on in the garden shed, which she could see from the bedroom window.

George opened the back door to go turn off the light but saw that there were people in the shed stealing things.

He phoned the police, who asked 'Is someone in your house?' and he said 'no'. Then they said that all patrols were busy, and that he should simply lock his door and an officer would be along when available. George said, 'Okay,' hung up, counted to 30, and phoned the police again.

'Hello, I just called you a few seconds ago because there were people stealing things from my shed. Well, you don't have to worry about them now because I've just shot them.' Then he hung up.

Within five minutes three police cars, an Armed Response Unit, and an ambulance showed up at the Phillips' residence and caught the burglars red-handed.

One of the Policemen said to George: 'I thought you said that you'd shot them!'
George said, 'I thought you said there was nobody available!'

Don't mess with old people!!

SEX SYMBOL
You need to click on this and wait a few seconds to get the effect.

....and I'm not sure who to thank for the one below it was on a joke site!

Harley Davidson

Arthur(Harley)Davidson, died and went to heaven.

At the gates, St. Peter told Arthur, "Since you've been such a good man and your motorcycles have changed the world, your reward is, you can hang out with anyone you want in Heaven."

Arthur thought about it for a minute and then said, "I want to hang out with God."

St. Peter took Arthur to the Throne Room and introduced him to God.
God recognized Arthur and commented, "Okay, so you were the one who invented the Harley Davidson motorcycle?"

Arthur said, "Yep, that's me."

God said, "Well, what's the big deal in inventing something that's pretty unstable, makes noise and pollution and can't run without a road?"

Arthur was apparently embarrassed, but finally he said, "Excuse me, but aren't You the inventor of woman?"

God said, "Yes."

"Well," said Arthur, "professional to professional, you have some major design flaws in your invention:

1. There's too much inconsistency in the front-end protrusions;
2. It chatters constantly at high speeds;
3. Most of the rear ends are too soft and wobble too much;
4. The intake is placed way too close to the exhaust;
5. And the maintenance costs are enormous!"

"Hmmm, you have some good points there," replied God, "hold on." God went to His Celestial super computer, typed in a few words and waited for the results. The computer printed out a slip of paper and God read it.

"Well, it may be true that my invention is flawed," God said to Arthur, "but according to these numbers, more men are riding my invention than yours."

Better late than never but after reading these you may not agree hehehe LOL

And now we are Eight!

If you are here for Witty Wednesday it will not be posted until later.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BEN
The years roll by so quickly and here we are celebrating the 8th Birthday of my youngest grandson, Ben. Back in 2000, we all wondered if he would arrive on his mother's birthday but he decided to wait.
Ben, as the youngest, always strives to keep up with his brother and sister and consequently he can be quite adventurous. He is also mischievous and he likes to wind me up when I try to take photos. So I was quite please to get this one after several attempts.
As you can see from the photo below the brothers can play, together, quite nicely; although, they were trying to beat each other at some game when I took this picture. They were concentrating so hard I don't think they even noticed me with the camera.
We hope you have a lovely Birthday, Ben, and we also hope you enjoy opening your presents and having fun with your friends.

Lots of Love

Getting worried.......

.....my mind's in a whirl....why you may ask?

Well, I haven't really done any Christmas Shopping yet and to be honest I'm having trouble trying to decide what to get everyone.
Embee has given me a small list of things he would like, and I know what my eldest grandson wants. I'm waiting for Beccy to guide me on the rest of her family.

Sam has been very busy at work so she hasn't yet had time to send me ideas. However, as I will be ordering on the internet that will be OK.

My mother is still dithering, everything I suggest she doesn't want and says there are things she wants more but can she come up with anything...not so far.

I have to seek help from my two nieces, for their children, in fact I will be trying to ring them as soon as I have finished writing this post.

I wonder am I the only one finding it difficult to choose Christmas gifts!!!!

Fun Monday # 92 Moments to remember

The hostess with the mostest this week is Mariposa and this is the assignment she has set us:

High moments...in our lives!

If you could share to us 3-5 high moments in your lives...this could be funny moments...the you can't believe you did it moments...the "I told you so" moments...or the times we asked the ground to go open and eat us moments! You need not write a book to explain them, the highlights will do.

How can I look back over nearly 65 years and not manage to recall many high moments in my life and none of the ground opening moments. I'm sure there must be plenty but I seem to have pushed them into some dark corner of my mind.

Actually that's not true the birth of both my children were high moments in my life not least because they were both very difficult births and they were eventually delivered by forceps. I can tell in those last stages I wouldn't have minded if the ground had opened and swallow me up.
Luckily those moments were very short lived and I had two beautiful daughters who were, and still are central to my life.
Following on from this the birth of my first grandson was another momentous moment. I hated seeing Beccy suffer through her labour and not being able to do anything to help. I was there until she was taken into the operating theatre and then I waited anxiously outside while she has a caesarian. After his parents I was the first person to cuddle Dillon and of course it was love at first sight!

I'm going to leave it there... as I'm sure this is not really what Mariposa was looking for, so sorry for being dull and probably predictable.

If either of my daughter can think of any *can't believe or ground swallowing* incident that I could have shared they can leave me a comment!

Did I do the wrong thing?

On Friday I think I did a silly thing. Let me explain several weeks ago I had a letter from my GP(doc) inviting me to have a flu injection. Now when I was at work I used to be offered the same service (they would pay) but I never bothered because I had managed to remain pretty much germ free despite working in places where the germs were flying around. Since retiring I have not suffered from colds or flu although I do get a bit of rhinitis especially after flying.

So my dilemma......to have the flu jab or not. Both my mother and EmBee always have theirs, and my mother always feels ill after it. Anyway, I pushed the letter to one side and promptly forgot about it.
Then on Wednesday I had a phone call from Diane (Practice manager) reminding me that I had not booked an appointment. I was surprised at such service, anyway we had a discussion on the pros and cons and I allowed myself to be persuaded it was a good idea. I booked the appointment which was only being done on a Friday lunchtime (hmm I would have to miss my swimming).
I arrived in plenty of time because this was the first time I had visited the new home for my doctor (they moved back in July)..... I took my camera but forgot to take a photo but this is what it looks like
It looks quite smart from the outside and inside there is an automatic call system. Actually your name flashes up (a bit like in the bus shelters) and if you are immersed in a book, you might miss it like I nearly did!
I was met by a very pleasant treatment room nurse who asked me a few questions about allergies and then jabbed me in the left arm. So far so good, she then asked me did I want the pneumonia jab, again pro cons discussed. Did I really want to be pumped with bugs......yes I succumbed and got a jab in the other arm. She advised me to take paracetamol if I felt unwell...she then had me worried!
We went on to chat about the injections needed for my trip to China, and I find that she is also going there next year for her 25th Wedding Anniversary (surprising what you find out!). I'm going next week to plan my injections.....I hope the trip is worth it!

I bet you are wondering what is the point of all this rambling....well since the injections I've been feeling off colour... not exactly ill but aching limbs and itchy lumps on both arms... so I'm now wondering if I did the right thing... if after all this I get a cold or worst still flu I will be furious!

The cynical side of me says they are not really interested in my health but are keen to get the money for administering all these injections. What do you think??

Memes and an Award

I've been tagged by two of my plurk pals and because I have done both of these memes in the recent past I have decided to cheat and just put in a link to the post I did earlier this month.

So Jim and Rantz if you want to find out a bit more about me you will find lots of links to previous meme's here.

I was given this lovely award, a couple of days ago, by storyteller over at Small Reflections and I now have the Tina Turner song running through my brain. I will be adding this to my gallery.

I think it should be passed on to all the Fun Monday devotees because in my books they too 'are simply the best' for keeping this running for so long. It will be two years come 22nd January. This may not be a record but a wonderful group of bloggers have hosted and participated in the weekly challenge during this time.

Hope everyone enjoys the rest of the weekend.

Happy Birthday to my baby

Today someone in the family has a birthday! I think you'll agree she was the sweetest little baby. If I remember correctly she was wearing a little yellow knitted cardigan in this photo that was taken a few days after she was born.
In case you haven't guessed it is Beccy. She never likes the photos I publish so let's hope this one meets with approval!

Hope you have a lovely day Beccy.

Ladies we might feel this should be reversed!!!!!
************************************
John is responsible for this Fishing Tale

Saturday morning I got up early, dressed quietly, made my lunch, grabbed the dog, slipped quietly into the garage to hook the boat up to the truck, and proceeded to back out into a torrential downpour.

The wind was blowing 50 mph. I pulled back into the garage, turned on the radio, and discovered that the weather would be bad throughout the day.

I went back into the house, quietly undressed, and slipped back into bed. There I cuddled up to my wife's back, now with a different anticipation, and whispered, 'The weather out there is terrible.'

My loving wife of 20 years replied, 'Can you believe my stupid husband is out fishing in that sh * t?'

I still don't know to this day if she was joking, but I've stopped fishing.
***********************
and John also sent me this one:

A woman awakes during the night to find that her husband was not in their bed.

She puts on her robe and goes downstairs to look for him.

She finds him sitting at the kitchen table with a hot cup of coffee in front of him.

He appears to be in deep thought, just staring at the wall.

She watches as he wipes a tear from his eye and takes a sip of his coffee.

'What's the matter, dear?' she whispers as she steps into the room, 'Why are you down here at this time of night?'

The husband looks up from his coffee, 'I am just remembering when we first met 20 years ago and started dating.

You were only 16. Do you remember back then?' he asks solemnly.

The wife is almost reduced to tears herself, just thinking how caring and sensitive her husband is.

'Yes, I do' she replies.

The husband pauses.

The words were not coming easily. 'Do you remember when your father caught us in the back seat of my car?'

'Yes, I remember,' said the wife, lowering herself into a chair beside him.

The husband continues. 'Do you remember when he shoved that shotgun in my face and said, 'Either you marry my daughter, or I will send you to jail for 20 years?'

'I remember that, too' she replies softly.

He wipes another tear from his cheek and says...'I would have gotten out today.'

Have fun and keep smiling my friends.

Cheesy Vegetable Hotpot

I haven't given you a recipe for a long time and yesterday I tried another from my BBC Good Food (101 One-pot dishes) that Beccy gave me as a Mothering Sunday present.

Cheesy Vegetable Hotpot:
Takes 35-40 minutes Serves 4

Ingredients:

3 leeks, trimmed and roughly sliced
Large knob of butter
Half a small Savoy cabbage (shredded)
8 chestnut mushrooms (sliced)
4 tablespoons Crème Fraishe
3 medium potatoes (peeled and thinly sliced)
1 small camembert or other rinded soft cheese (sliced with rind on)
1 tablespoon of fresh thyme leaves

Method:
1 In shallow microwaveable dish, toss leeks and half the bitter and microwave on high for 5 mins-until they begin to soften. Stir in cabbage, and mushrooms and add crème fraishe. lay potato slices overthe vegetables, pressing them down with a fish slice.
2 Dot the potatoes with the remaining butter and microwave, uncovered for 15-20 minutes, (on high until they are done). Scatter over the cheese and thyme and either microwave on high to melt for 2 minutes or grill untill crisp and brown. Leave to stand for a few minutes before serving.
Looks like this with the potatoes before cooking.
I used camembert cheese and wished I had put a little more. My fresh thyme was over so I used some dry thyme. I also put under the grill to melt cheese and brown.
This is the end result which could be used as a supper dish or as a vegetable accompaniment. EmBee and I enjoyed it so why don't you give it a try if you are looking for something quick and tasty!

POSTSCRIPT: I realise that from comments that I need to 'clarify' so I googled and this is what I found....
What, Precisely, Is a Knob of Butter?

How much is a "knob of butter?"

How much do you want it to be? Certainly more than a dash, and well more than a pinch — neither of which seems the best way to measure butter, in any event.

A knob of butter is a British term denoting some butter, and its use is sadly declining as zealous editors force more precision and science into our recipes and cookbooks. Even the loosest British cooks (and we mean that in the nice way) might get away with telling you to add a knob of butter on a television program. But if their cookbooks are published in the States, you can bet someone will have translated all those knobs into precise measurements.

In our experience, a knob of butter is a couple tablespoons, more or less.

Fun Monday # 91 Jewelery

Our host today is M is for Misanthrope and this is the task she has set us:

Do you have a piece of jewelry or other item that holds great personal significance for you, and that you wear or keep with you every day? Show us a photo of your talisman, and tell us why it is so important to you.

Hints: Your talisman could be your wedding ring…or your lack thereof! Maybe it’s a bracelet or watch that belonged to a beloved relative or friend. Perhaps your item is significant in your faith, if you are of a religious persuasion, or maybe it is a proud symbol of your ethnicity. Maybe it’s something silly, that makes you smile every time you look at it! Maybe your talisman is actually part of you - perhaps you got a tattoo to mark a significant event in your life. I’m also thinking about our recent observation of Veterans’ Day here in the USA: Perhaps you have a loved one who is far away - in the military or otherwise - and you carry a memento of him or her with you every day.

Disclaimer: Please, let’s keep the photos and stories family-friendly. In other words, I do NOT want to see that piercing or tattoo you-know-where :-) Sorry, but them’s the rules!

Now this suits me just fine as I my body is tattoo free and the only things pierced are my ears!
I do have quite a lot of jewelery and in my younger days I loved wearing all of it. However, it seems as I have matured, I have become allergic to gold (this annoys me as I have many pairs of earings). In fact I only had my ears pierced because Embee bought me a pair of tennis raquet earrings for pierced ears-Sadly one of these got lost so I can't show a picture of these!
I've decided not to bore you with lots of photos and will show you the one item I do wear all the time-this is my watch (is this classed as jewelery)! EmBee bought me this watch a few years ago after missing a few presents for (Birthday, Christmas Anniversary. Anyway it's a Rado and I'm rather fond of it

I'm looking forward to seeing a lot more interesting posts than this one!

A holiday reunion

Yesterday I met up with some of the people I was on holiday with in Corfu. We met at the home of Anna (blonde lady standing) and everyone took a Greek dish. It was a wonderful spread and we ended up with far too much food for ten people. I think those who lived locally were going back to eat up some of the leftovers for lunch today and the rest will be heading for the freezer!

There were a lot of holiday pictures to look and it was interesting to see how differently the same shot can be captured. There were also a couple of me that I would rather not have seen! They say the camera never lies well I wish it would as I don't like looking that fat even if I am.....no I'm not showing!!!!!!

Supergran

As many of you, who plurk or twitter, will know my alias is Supergran. A few weeks ago I was looking through You Tube to see if I could find any clips of the early TV programmes of the Supergran series. I found this introduction which comes from the TV museum (seems apt LOL), and wondered if it might bring back some memories to anyone in the UK.

I don't look like this, well not yet anyway!

Corfu Keykera # 5 Mon Repos

I know my holiday in Corfu is rather a distant memory but I still have several draft post of photos so I thought as it was a dreary day I would cheer myself up by posting a few reminders of sunnier times.
One of the places I enjoyed visiting was the birth place of Prince Philip which is now a museum.

It is very quiet peaceful walking in the grounds and you get some lovely views from the top of the house.
One of the people who organised this trip has a very special connection to Corfu. Her great-great grandfather (John Davenport Shakespear) was stationed there with the British army back in 1856. Her great grandmother was born on the island and baptized in St Georges Church on the Old Fortress, same as Prince Philip.
The family lived in a flat above Edward Lear and they became friends. Lear sold Shakespear a 'photograhic machine' in 1858 and he took many photographs of the Island. This collection of photos have now been made the centre of a permanent exhibition; and is housed in one of the rooms in Mon Repos. I feel very privileged to have been present at the preview, organised to coincide with our visit. The exhibition is a very important record of the social history of Corfu. The original photo album is now in a special glass case to ensure it is properly preserved.
We were also allowed to tour the whole house including the top floor, which is used for educational visits.
Below you see one of the pictures of an artifact excavated nearby.

You might just be able to make out all the little pottery pots in the miniature kiln.

The top room is circular and the central windows looks down on the floors below.

So should you ever visit Corfu I would recommend a visit to Mon Repos.

Thursday Thoughts

Firstly this is a picture of a Butterfly that I took when I was in Corfu. It's not a terribly good picture because it wouldn't keep still for very long! I think it is a Swallowtail!

Secondly my new header is part of a panorama view I made from photos taken on a walk at Carrickgollogan when I was staying with Beccy last month.

Finally I am taking part in a Christmas Ornament swap arranged by Julie. I'm just showing that my parcel is going in the post today. No clues as to where it is going...I took the photo before adding the address!! There are about 60 bloggers taking part, and this must have taken a lot of organisation...so thanks to you Julie, I now know I will be getting at least one Christmas surprise!

Witty Wednesday # 72 Christmas, Adultery

John thought we needed to get the Christmas jokes started:

2008's First Christmas Joke

Three men died on Christmas Eve and were met by Saint Peter at the pearly gates.

"In honor of this holy season" Saint Peter said, "You must each possess something that symbolizes Christmas to get into heaven."

The first man fumbled through his pockets and pulled out a lighter. He flicked it on. "It represents a candle", he said.

"You may pass through the pearly gates" Saint Peter said.

The second man reached into his pocket and pulled out a set of keys. He shook them and said, "They're bells."

Saint Peter said "You may pass through the pearly gates".

The third man started searching desperately through his pockets and finally pulled out a pair of women's panties.

St. Peter looked at the man with a raised eyebrow a and asked, "And just what do those symbolize?"

The man replied, "These are Carols."

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
ADULTERY

A middle-aged couple had two beautiful daughters but always talked about having a son.

They decided to try one last time for the son they always wanted.

The wife got pregnant and delivered a healthy baby boy.

The joyful father rushed to the nursery to see his new son.

He was horrified at the ugliest child he had ever seen.

He told his wife: 'There's no way I can be the father of this baby. Look at the two beautiful daughters I fathered! Have you been fooling around behind my back?'

The wife smiled sweetly and replied: 'No, not this time!'

A mortician was working late one night.

He examined the body of Mr. Schwartz, about to be cremated, and made a startling discovery. Schwartz had the largest private part that he had ever seen!

'I'm sorry Mr. Schwartz,'the mortician commented, 'I can't allow you to be cremated with such an impressive private part. It must be saved for posterity.'

So, he removed it, stuffed it into his briefcase, and took it home.

'I have something to show you won't believe,' he said to his wife, opening his briefcase.

'My God!' the wife exclaimed, 'Schwartz is dead!'

Jake was dying. His wife sat at the bedside.

He looked up and said weakly: 'I have something I must confess.'

'There's no need to, 'his wife replied.

'No,' he insisted, 'I want to die in peace.
I slept with your sister, your best friend, her best friend, and your mother!'

'I know,' she replied. 'Now just rest and let the poison work.'

Man and Wife Shopping

A husband and wife are doing their grocery shopping.
The man picks up a case of beer and sticks it into the shopping trolley. 'What do you think you're doing?' asks the wife 'They're on sale, only £10.00 for 24 cans', he says.
'Put them back. We can't afford it,' says the wife and they carry on shopping.

A few aisles later the woman picks up a £20.00 jar of face cream and sticks
it into the cart. 'Whoa, what do you think you're doing?' asks the man. 'It's my face cream. It makes me look beautiful,' she says.

The man replies...'SO DOES 24 CANS OF BEER, AND IT'S HALF THE PRICE!'

I can't remember whether I've posted this last one before!!! See I'm getting a bit forgetful and that's not funny!!! Have a fun day and remember it's all downhill to the weekend!

Fun Monday # 90 We must never forget

Janis is our hostess this week and here is the assignment! She says"

"Since Next Tuesday is Veterans Day, I thought it would be nice to salute our Veterans and show our appreciation. Photo requirement of something patriotic".

Now if anyone saw my post yesterday you may have realised that here in the UK yesterday was Remembrance Sunday when services were held throughout the country and poppies were laid to remember and honour the many brave people who have laid down their lives for their country in the many conflicts since WW1. This year is the 90th Anniversary of Armistice Day and there are now very few veterans alive who fought in WW1.
Every year a service is held in London at the Cenotaph and the Queen lays the first wreath.

On Tuesday there will be other services and I believe the second oldest WW1 survivor, in the UK, Harry Patch (110yr) who lives in my part of the country will be honoured.

We do not have a public holiday on Thursday as they do in America, however, since 2006 a national Veterans Day has been introduced into the calendar.

Former servicemen and women are honoured on 27 June every year at a series of ceremonies across the UK.

Former soldiers, air crews and sailors are presented with medals at local events on National Veterans Day. At the time The Veterans Agency said 27 June was chosen as it comes the day after the anniversary of the first investiture of the Victoria Cross, which happened in Hyde Park, London, in 1857.

When Gordon Brown, announced the plans for the annual event, he said the aim was to ensure the contribution of veterans was "never forgotten". I think this was one of his better decisions! However, the day has not become a national holiday and in some ways I think this was a mistake. (Veterans in the US have had an official holiday since 1954, when Armistice Day on 11 November was changed to Veterans Day by an Act of Congress).

They shall not grow old as we who are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.
