What's the future of the Royal Mail!!

The postal regulator has apparently called for Royal Mail to be partly privatised to safeguard the quality of the UK's mail delivery service.

Excuse me what quality! the delivery is erratic at best and at worst millions of letters get lost in the system or stolen. I live not far from the main sorting office for the Bristol area. Every time I drive past the car park is full of vans and I often see a little huddle of people outside smoking.

Now don't get me wrong we have charming posties who deliver door to door and the chap who brings the parcels is very friendly. The problem is you never knows what time to expect a delivery, which can be very frustrating if you are waiting for something important.
A few years ago, we had two deliveries a day and collections from mail boxes were done several times a day and on a Sunday. Sadly all this has been whittled away and even though prices have risen dramatically, still the Royal Mail is losing money.

So I ask myself would it be a good or bad thing for some of it to be privatised. If the costs become more competitive and the service improves maybe it wouldn't be such a bad thing but then I look at what has happened to the train services, bus services and utilities and think maybe not! It will be interesting to see what Gordon Brown decides to do-correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't it one of Labour's manifesto pledges to keep Royal Mail in public ownership!

Our mail is terrible too. I have to wonder how much of our mail is lost as we are always getting other peoples mail even though it is addressed properly. The postie blames the sorters, they blame the postie! Mail goes missing and never arrives.

I have been under the impression that your mail works a lot better than ours. Maybe it does.

I haven't had too many problems with the US mail - except that it keeps getting more expensive. But, if it was privatized, it might run even smoother.

Karisma we also get wrongly delivered mail, luckily the neighbours are good and all put it through the correct doors, unless it's too far away!

AC do you have to collect your mail from a post box, rather than have it delivered to the door. My friend in Toronto had to do this.

karmyn Sam sent me some important paper and after 9 days they arrived back at her house. So she had to start over again! They still haven't arrived here!

Our post only gets collected once a day, five days a week. It really surprised me when someone got a letter which was collected from the post box at 5.30pm on Monday evening at 8.30am on Tuesday morning. Of course some still had arrived on Wednesday and they were all posted at the same time.

If you think the wail is slow, you should see the vans charging down the Ring road at about 16.15hrs each day-they are making up for the miles an hour postmen.

We may be wailing - but I meant Mail.

you got 2 deliveries a day? wow.

luckily we get mail once a day, and they're on the same route every day so you know about what time to expect them. also we have several package delivery services, and once you live somewhere, you know when to expect them. for instnace fedex will come shortly after lunch time and ups will come around 4 pm. can't tell we've been shopping online a lot for the holidays, can you?

Our postie comes like clockwork between 1 and 1.30pm every day and this time of year he comes twice a day...... he even leaves stuff around the back if Im not in and its to big to fit through the letterbox....

I do a lot of dabbling on ebay and 'touch wood' as yet everything Ive ever posted off has arrived....

And the village post office is friendly and fun and our postbox outside gets emptied twice a day, we must just be lucky down here....

One of me nippers is fasinated by the post office vans and postmen that I had to buy a little dressing up postmans outfit which he wears when we go out LOL

marmie you are very lucky with your postie. We lost our local post office a few months ago. This means that whenever I go to the next closest there is always a queue out the door, and a very long wait. I was told that yet another PO fairly close won't take large parcels- can you believe it!
