Awards come in twos!

Isn't this the sweetest little button...
.....that has just been given to me by Karisma after it was bestowed on her by Robin. Karisma is an amazing person and I always look forward to reading her posts. Not only does she home school, she writes brilliant poetry and takes interesting photos. Karisma knows me well and she has reminded me I can only give love to 7 friends and you know how difficult that is for me.

So I'm going to pass this on to:

Kitten over at Kitten's Homeschool as she needs a little love at the moment.

Pamela whose dust is always waiting The Dust will wait and I find this very comforting as I much prefer blogging to dusting!

Karmyn over at Dreaming What ifs who has not long added a beautiful little Caboose to her lovely family. We all had so much fun following her pregnancy and his late arrival. He's now a beautiful smiling 3 month old.

Jettie over at We start and End with Family I enjoy hearing about her lovely family (they will soon have an addition) and seeing her photos. She is running a competition to give a title to one of her photo so you might want to check it out).

Angela at the The Lurchers because she loves her animals and often fosters abandoned Lurchers until they can be re-homed. She also lives in a beautiful spot and I enjoy seeing all her photos. Angela has a new camera so I'm eagerly awaiting her next photos.

Daffy over at Approaching 40 as we often seem to be on the same wave length and share the same sense of humour.

Terri over at My Four Kids who had now been in Alaska a year. It must be the grandmother in me because I love to see how her children are getting on in their new life. She also lives in beautiful place so I get to enjoy some spectacular photos.

So how did I do Karisma.... see I can obey the rules sometimes!!!!


Now for the second award.......

Alix at Marmite and tea has just been having a wonderful touring holiday and she ended up visiting San Francisco which is a place I love because it's where my eldest daughter, Sam, lives. She has still found time to bestow this lovely award on some of her blogging pals and I'm lucky enough to be one of them.

Now I don't think I have any restrictions on how many people I pass this one on to so in addition to my two daughters, Beccy and Sam, who are most definitely my dearest friends; I give this to all my blog buddies who I trust because they are very caring and have provided me with kindness, through their encouraging but honest comments.

I will be putting these awards into my gallery and I thank Karisma and Alix for nominating me ~ I feel like I'm at the Oscars isn't it great!

I can't remember exactly what I was doing but I think it was a weekend because I do remember spending a lot of time in front of the TV on that day. I found it hard to believe at first, and it was so very sad for Princes William and Harry. I must also confess that one of my first thoughts were, *was this just a tragic accident*!

Margaret Thatcher's resignation - 22 November 1990

This is the day after Beccy's birthday but I have no idea what I was doing. I expect I was at work~probably doing an inspection of some day care establishment.

Attack on the twin towers - 11 September 2001

This was less than two weeks after I had started working for Ofsted. I was getting used to being based at home and I clearly remember my mother coming to tell me a plane had flown into the Twin Towers. My initial thought was that my mother hadn't got it right, then when I turned my TV on I though it *what an awful accident* but I soon realised my mistake. I think I spend the day running between my computer doing my work and the TV to catch any updates.

England's World Cup semi final v Germany - 4 July 1990

This was just after I had completed a 2 year secondment to Bristol University for CQSW (Social work). I have no interest in football so I doubt I even watched the match, but I probably saw the highlights.

President Kennedy's Assassination - 22 November 1963

Again I don't recall any detail because at the time I was quite young (19) and I was in the middle of training to become a SRN (state registered nurse). I don't recall whether I was on night or day duty. I can tell you it was pretty hard work back then. I had no real interest in politics but do recall feeling quite shocked that a public person could be assassinated that easily.

Hunt the Book

Many of you will know that, my eldest daughter, Sam has been in San Francisco for the past seven years. I think it is safe to say that she is very happy living there and hopes to remain there permanently. I've shipped a lot of her belongings over and some things have gone over in a suitcases as we have travelled to and fro. Despite this there are still a lot of things that has been left in storage with me. I have got one small room that is stacked practically from floor to ceiling. A few boxes of teapots belong to Beccy but the vast majority belong to Sam. Now she is very keen to have one particular cookery book that is in one of the many boxes. In hindsight I don't know why I didn't take it to Portugal when we met up there back in June!
Anyway yesterday I decided to go and look through the boxes and try to find the book. At the time I also thought I would record the search. I think this was a mistake, because it's turned out to be a fairly boring video so I'm not really expecting you to watch it.
So if you didn't watch the video~this is a photo of the storage room and the book I found
Now do you think the reason she treasures this book is because of the rather sweet inscription, written in her own fair hand!

I have an earlier version of this same cookery book that is so old and battered because it has been so well used over the years. It has been stuck with cellotape and is covered with food marks but I wouldn't ever part with it and I still use it more than all my other cookery books. I wonder if you have a favourite cook book!

Never mind Twenty Wishes....My wish was granted!

A couple of days ago I read this post over at my friend Daffy's. Now never being one to be backwards in coming forward (have I got that right!), I politely suggested that the book came my way. I had an email from Daffy yesterday, asking for my adress, and would you believe what arrived in today's post. I could hardly get the package open before my mother pounced on it so, being a dutiful daughter, I said she could read it first (I'm already in the middle of a book so it worked out well)! I will then pass it on to Beccy and tell her to do the same.

2nd crop of home grown spuds!

Do you recall this post about the red potatoes we grew in a tub. Well yesterday the second crop was ready to harvest. These were a smaller, white variety, and a different shape. I am planning on cooking some for dinner tonight so I hope they taste as good as they look.

This is two down and one tub left to go for this year! We may expand a bit next year all being well.

So my head if full of this sort of useless trivia picked up from school.....
.....however one thing that does stick in my head is that when I was in junior school we had to learn poems and this is one that really appealed to me not that I could get my head around a lot of the words when I was about 10 years old. Now, I only ever remember bits of the last verse:

King Bladud's Pigs

I first need to introduce you to King Bladud so that you understand........

King Bladud’s Pigs in Bath is a summer 2008 public art event to celebrate Bath, its origins and its artists and provide residents and visitors with some artistic enjoyment. One hundred life-size pig sculptures turned into works of art are on display throughout the summer all around Bath and beyond - to be gathered in at the end of September, then auctioned off in October for the benefit of the Two Tunnels Project.

When Beccy and Ben were here a few weeks ago you may remember me telling about our visit to Fishworks Cafe. As we left the cafe we saw the pig below and it took a lot of persuasion to get Ben to pose with the pig. However once we turned it into a game he got very excited and we rushed around looking for as many pigs as possible in the limited time available. We didn't have a pig map (although I do now) but we managed to find a few and I thought I would share them with you.

2007: Fun Monday-30

This and That!

I haven't written a proper post today as I didn't have enough time to prepare my photos. This is because I spent quite a lot of today catching up reading the rest of the Fun Monday posts I couldn't get to yesterday. I'm still not sure I actually made it to everyone, but I did my best.

Rather than reply individually to all the entertaining answers you gave to the question I posed, I would just like to say thank you for your brilliant efforts. If you had been here you would have heard me laughing; I just knew there would be a lot of inspired responses to my little bit of nonsense!

Anyone who reads my blog regularly might remember my mother is being investigated for a problem with her lung. So far they haven't found the cause and early this evening we had to take her for a scan. It was an odd time 5:25pm but it did mean Embee was home to drive us and drop us off as close as possible to the Radiology department. It was not easy for my mother lying in the position necessary for the scan but she managed it and survived the ordeal, by concentrating on saying her prayers throughout.
Thanks to the helpful cleaner (I'm sure they have some fancy name these days), I found out where the wheelchairs are kept and borrowed one to save my mother the long walk through the building to the exit door. She could hardly breath and the injections had made her feel a bit dizzy (I wonder why they didn't warn us!). She is now safely tucked up in bed, because we go back tomorrow afternoon to see the consultant and hopefully he will have the scan results and will give us a diagnosis.
If you could keep her in your thoughts tomorrow afternoon I would appreciate it.

2007: Signs speak louder than words

Healthiest Option!!!

Embee promised to treat me to lunch out and as I'm not one to turn down any offer which means I don't have to cook I immediately agreed! So as I had some clothes to return we decided on the Deli bar of our local Marks & Spencer store.

We have been here several times and Embee is gradually eating his way through the menu. This time he decided to try the burger mainly because he liked the look of the chips when he saw someone eating them last time we ate there. He did let me try one chip! I opted for the Chicken Caesar Salad which came with sour dough bread ...and a glass of cranberry juice......
All the food is prepared as you wait and much is actually done in front of you so you can see what is going on. It's not fancy and it is next to the food section of the store so I guess they see it as a good advert for their food. It is certainly worth a visit, and Beccy before I get a comment to say I haven't taken you there~next time you come but I'm not sure it would appeal to the children!

When in doubt blame the British weather!

Isn't that what the farmers do!!

I fully realise that talking about the weather is a very boring British pastime. It's either too cold, too hot, too humid and we have far too much rain.

Well actually, as far as I am concerned, we are having far too much rain at the moment and not enough sun. Why, because, apart from the fact that too many of my pot plants becoming water logged and rotting, I have plenty of these growing in my garden........

but only...........two are anywhere near ripening.

We do have a few blackberries beginning to turn colour but it will only be a small crop as it is a new plant.

........however, on a brighter note, Embee and I did enjoy some French Beans earlier in the week........after a friend gave me five very small plants which actually benefited from the rain!

When Beccy was staying she posed the question "as you get so little return, is growing in pots and borders actually cost effective". The short answer is no but even the very small amount that we manage to grow is fresh, free from pesticides and tastes wonderful so I guess that the answer is ........well what do you think!!

PS Also a worrying fact is that the tortoises do not eat when it is cold and wet so they are not building up for the long hibernation.

Award & meme

I feel very privileged to have been given this award not only for a second but also a third time within a few days of each other by my very kind friends Kitten and Alison. I'm only sorry that it's taken me a while to get this post published. Along with the award comes a meme which I might just have done before, I didn't trawl my archives to check so here goes:

(A.) attached or single? Attached for the second time for past 30 years.

(B.) best friend? I would have to say my children

(C.) cake or pie? depends if it's home baking...I hate having to choose so I won't!

(D.) day of choice? if I was still at work it would be Friday now I'm retired it's holiDAY

(E.) essential item? gotta be the computer where would I be without you guys!

(F.) favorite color? I love autumn colours but also the whole purple/deep pink/blue range

(G.) gummy bears or worms? difficult but gummy bears

(I.) favorite indulgence? Champagne

(J.) January or July? It ought to be January when it's my birthday but much prefer July when we should get some sun!

(K.) kids? two girl who have long since flown the nest

(M.) marriage date? March 78 that's as close as I'll give you and it's not because I can't remember!

(N.) number of brothers & sisters? I only have 1 brother and that's enough to cope with

(S.) season of choice? oooh difficult spring/autumn but summer is also great (I'm sitting on the fence on this one!)

The hostess with the mostest this week is Aoj and at first glance she gave us an easy assignment...

2007: What's in a name

Bowood House cont.

Although Bowood House if only about 30 miles from Bristol I have never visited this pretty Estate. My family have been several times and the main attraction for the children is the adventure playground which I showed photos of yesterday. It is very pretty and you can take a walk to the lake (I didn't this time but I do intend to return to explore some more). I walked over to look at the house and the formal terraced gardens and here are some of the photos I took:

Adventure Playground at Bowood House

This playground is really for children under 12 yrs and adults accompanying younger children. However, looking at the children who were there I would say quite a few were older teenagers, including my grandson and his friend all of whom were really enjoying the fun. As you can see from the photos below. I always loved swing boats but decided to keep my feet on the ground and enjoy my newspaper and a book while Beccy had a snooze
